Acclaimed English director Stephen Frears will receive the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award at the upcoming 74th Venice International Film Festival (August 30 to September 7, 2017). The award is specially dedicated to a “personality who has made an original contribution to innovation in contemporary cinema”.

“Prolific and unpredictable, eclectic and provocative, Stephen Frears seems to challenge the very idea of a monolithic definition of his cinema,” said Alberto Barbera, the director of the Venice Film Festival regarding the award. “Along with Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, he is one of the most vibrant and representative exponents of contemporary British cinema. As opposed to many other directors, he is not afraid of seeming self-contradictory: he nonchalantly passes from the social realism of the 1980s to biographies, from comedies to historical dramas, alternating British and American movies, low-budget and high-budget productions, cinema and television, and each time he is at ease.”

The upcoming award ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 3 in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) prior to the Out of Competition screening of Frears‘ latest film, Victoria & Abdul. The English director is best remembered for some of the most acclaimed directorial efforts in the modern cinema such as Dangerous Liaisons (1988), The Grifters (1990), High Fidelity (2000) and The Queen (2006).
