One of Hong Kong’s most renowned auteurs, Wong Kar-Wai, is planning to direct his next feature based on the murder of Maurizio Gucci. The grandson of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci and also the former head of the eponymous Italian fashion house, Maurizio was shot to death in March 1995 by a gunman hired by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. She was later sentenced to 16 years in prison for masterminding the murder. Although the cast is yet to be determined, rumour has it that Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad) might star in the movie.
If everything falls into place, the yet-untitled Maurizio Gucci movie would mark Wong Kar-Wai‘s long-awaited return to the director’s chair following his 2013’s The Grandmaster. The Ip Man biopic, which starred Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Zhang Ziyi, was a huge international hit and even made history after winning a record 12 Hong Kong Film Awards including Best Film and Best Director.
Prior to Wong Kar-Wai‘s involvement, the Maurizio Gucci movie has been in development over the last few years with Ridley Scott originally attached as the director in 2007. Back then, Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie were set to star in the movie.
