This year’s CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc.) Awards have recently concluded with the announcement of respective winners took place at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
However, the biggest winner here is the current Calvin Klein chief creative officer Raf Simons, who took home not one but two CFDA awards after named the Menswear Designer of the Year and the Womenswear Designer of the Year for his Fall 2017 collection.
Upon accepting the Menswear Designer of the Year award, he said: “I came to America because America is inspiring to me”.
“It’s our task to inspire and be an example for all the people, and I think if we as creatives can be an inspiration for how the world should look, we should take it as an important task of our existence,” said Simons after receiving the Womenswear Designer of the Year award.
His double victory at the 2017 CFDA Awards also marks a historical record as the second fashion designer to be awarded for both categories in the same year. Ironically enough, the first person who won both statuettes was Calvin Klein himself back in 1993.
In addition to Simons‘ double wins, Demna Gvasalia of Vetements and Balenciaga won International Award while Stuart Vevers of Coach took home the Accessory Designer of the Year and the late Franca Sozzani of Vogue Italia editor-in-chief was honoured the Fashion Icon Award. The CFDA Awards, which held annually since its inception in 1981, is considered a prestigious fashion award that earns the moniker as “the Oscars of Fashion”.
