Amancio Ortega, the 81-year-old Spanish business tycoon who founded Zara in 1975, has claimed the No. 2 spot on Forbes‘ real-time billionaire rankings. His total net worth is US$84.8 billion. The world’s richest man in the rankings remains the Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who has held the top spot with US$89.9 billion net worth total since May 2013.
But the most interesting fact of all is Ortega manages to upstage Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who has now dropped to the No. 3 spot. Bezos has previously crowned the richest man in the world but only for a brief time.
Apart from Zara, Ortega‘s retail company Inditex SA also owned other reputable fashion brands including Massimo Dutti and Pull & Bear.
