The 2017 edition of Uniqlo‘s UT Grand Prix contest has attracted a record 16,000 entries worldwide, as participants created original T-shirt designs inspired by Nintendo‘s iconic games and legendary characters. They include Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Kirby, Splatoon and the Pokémon series.
Now, the Japanese clothing retailer will reveal the 25 winning designs of Nintendo-themed T-shirts in Uniqlo stores across the globe beginning May 19. Japan’s Takashi Kawazoe was this year’s grand-prize winner, in which his Mario-themed design took home a cool US$10,000, an invitation to attend a special awards ceremony in Japan and a Nintendo Switch console signed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself.
“I was extremely surprised and pleased to receive such a prestigious award for my creation featuring one of Japan’s most renowned characters, Mario, as a motif,” said Kawazoe. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Uniqlo and Nintendo, including my family who supported me throughout. Thank you!”
The Nintendo x Uniqlo UT Grand Prix 2017 collection will be available in men’s, women’s and children’s sizes.
