Once upon a time, shopping on Instagram requires relevant third-party apps such as LikeToKnow.it, Chirpify and Soldsie to fulfil the task. Now, thanks to the recent announcement from Instagram, the popular photo app has teamed up with 20 U.S. retail brands such as Kate Spade, JackThreads, J.Crew and Warby Parker to test out the new shopping feature from next week onwards.
Each post from these participating retail brands will have a “tap to view” icon at the bottom left of a photo. Once the user tapped on the icon, a special tag will appear on every shoppable product in the post. Each brand can include up to 5 tags per photo. When one of the tags is selected, a new detailed view of the product will open. If the user chooses to tap on the “Shop Now” link from the product view, they will be directed to the brand’s website.
“Our community uses Instagram as an aspirational discovery platform and they’re looking to us for inspiration. This test is going to change the scope of what we, as retailers, are capable of offering on mobile. Instead of having to transition over to the JackThreads app, our customers will be able to shop seamlessly from their social media feeds—allowing us to reach guys where they’re already hunting for what’s new,” says Ryan McIntyre, CMO, JackThreads.
As of now, the test feature will only be available to users in the U.S.
