Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., the Japanese retail company who owned clothing brands like Uniqlo and J Brand, has launched the Denim Innovation Center in Los Angeles.

Dedicated to extensive denim research, the Denim Innovation Center‘s primary aim is to gather a team of specialists from different brands to produce high-quality jeans using innovative materials and technologies.

According to the press statement, the new denim facility will be focusing on the “3Fs” of jeans production, which includes “fabric, fit and finish”. From developing fabric with renowned manufacturers such as Kaihara to conducting research and development on the production technologies, every denim will be done completely in-house.

“It’s not just one particular thing. The idea is all related to denim, not only bottoms [but also] denim shirts, denim jackets [and] knitting,” said Masaaki Matsubara, the J Brand‘s head of design and the director of the Denim Innovation Center in addressing the “3Fs” research operations.

In terms of choosing Los Angeles as the main headquarters for the research facility, the city itself is also a home to some of the well-known jeans staples such as 7 For All Mankind, AG Jeans and G-Star Raw.

“Los Angeles is very important. Not only the wash houses, there are many brands here and many good retailers,” said Matsubara.

Following the launch of the Denim Innovation Center, the first research project will be centred on Uniqlo and J Brand. Both brands developed from the new jeans research facility are set to release in fall 2017.
