When Vincent first added me on Facebook, I never knew he’s a fashion designer, let alone the founder of The Comoddity. What I found out later surprised me even more – he was one of the 15 winners of Fashion Pitch 2013 (fashion idea that worth 2 millions, remember?)
The Comoddity (“Comoddity” is the love child of the words “common” & “oddity“) was founded by Vincent Siow in January 2014 with an ambition to create a menswear line that offers quality wardrobe staples with a unique twist. The strength and the differentiating characteristic of the label lies in the use of different textures, fabrics, appliques, patchwork and embroidery.
When the first capsule collection was released, the inspiration was about panelling, colour blocking, use of zips and contemporary embroidery:

Although it’s still at its infancy, the brand demonstrates great potential by winning the pitch contest last year, and this year, securing a show slot in the upcoming Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2014 (KLFW) to debut his first runway collection.
I finally met Vincent in person at a fashion show not long ago, and I remember popping the first question: A menswear line in Malaysia? Why?
“I was having a chat with a friend who started an online multi label store and he was telling me that there’s not enough menswear label in the region that is reasonably priced. Since I used to do designing and manufacturing for kidswear, I might be able to do menswear as well.”
Kidswear? So are you a designer by profession?
“No. I graduated in Accounting & Finance and Computing in University of Kent (UK).”
How did you get into fashion from Finance?
“After graduated, I moved to London and was looking for a job in accountancy/finance, but I knew that was not what I wanted to do. Instead, I started working for luxury brands in Harrods while studying Fashion Buying & Merchandising in the London College of Fashion – that was my first introduction to fashion and luxury.
I came back to Malaysia about 4 years ago and worked as a children’s apparel buyer. My job scope includes buying collections that suit the market, designing and dealing with manufacturers and etc. I then moved on to a job as a leasing executive for a mall about 2 years ago which I am still involved in now.
I am quite new to the fashion industry/scene in Malaysia as I just started the brand about 4 months ago.”
What’s your plan for The Comoddity?
“For 2014, the main focus is to build the brand. I will be showing in KLFW14. From there, I’m hoping to break into other markets within the region and increase our product categories.”
